The characters are well developed and the writing is excellent. This is my first Lorenzo Carcaterra book and I will certainly add it to my list of favorites.
It is a love story between Angelo, Pudge, and the young boy they take in. An excellent read that I cannot recommend enough. Vestieri takes the boy under his wing and ushers him into the world of organized crime.

The book is told in a series of flashbacks. Some, surprisingly, were very well-read. This is one of the best gangster novels I have read and is highly recommended.

The queen of the Cafe Maryland, Ida had been a mistress to many of the area’s gang leaders. I never intended her to become what she became. I should also add that as a young reader, revenge was something I was attracted to.
One of my favorite things about the book is the relationship between Angelo and Pudge, a streetwise Irish delinquent who became his best friend and off-sider. Angelo is a fascinating character full of deep anxieties and complexities.
This book is a rollercoaster read. A deal has been made to adapt Gangster into a miniseries for ABC.
Honestly, I loved the darkness that this book had, mixed in with wise teachings that can be applied to daily living. If you don’t give this a try you are simply nuts: The paperback version was published in the spring of and movie rights to the story are once again controlled by Jerry Bruckheimer Productions. Gangster is one of those books where the writing is so powerfully, beautifully haunting – and it just makes the book’s rich ideas and characterization that much richer.
