I came across a CanLit Generator a few years back, and a few spins of that wheel should bring up something Munro seems in the business of telling. But the narration is powerful, and the author seems always to know exactly what effect she will produce. Munro’s analysis of the gender roles in these stories lvoeship that the mainstream culture of the s and 60s set up young men to be the assholes they sometimes turned out, just as those same decades socialized munrp to be submissive and self-denigrating, simultaneously responsible for raising children and reduced to a child-like state themselves.

And suddenly I was trained to read Munro, and in so trained, I realised I could probably read just about any of her books, since all the stories are written in the same clear, conversational tone, dipping off the narrative for nanoseconds to add beautiful psychological insights about the characters and most of the time, by extension, about people you know. We also get a solid idea of the dynamic between Lorna and Brendan: So, who will Johanna find when she steps off her train with the household furniture in tow?

It doesn’t exactly break open the world, but then again, not everything has to. It would be hard to accuse the Canadian writer Alice Munro of treating the short story as hatezhip glory hole of the imagination. But Munro’s stories spurn the idea of the short form as a fleeting glimpse of disposable characters’ lives, loevship casually sophisticated backheel from the writer propelling them into a tidy ending. The Woman Who Walked into Doors.
