Those who met Ferdinand Bordewijk described him as an impeccable, nondescript lawyer. The expeditions in which Dreverhaven lives up to his frightening reputation, evicting the poor from their hovels, have a gruesome magnificence, with Bordewijk showing the bestial side of his human characters and giving houses and lanes anthropomorphic characteristics. Zijn vader, de bikkelharde deurwaarder Dreverhaven, probeert nog wel met de jonge, trotste, stugge moeder te trouwen door haar veelvuldig geld op te sturen, maar zij weigert.
Oh, en de eerste pagina kan ik wel honderd keer opnieuw lezen: Dreverhaven, however, is the most difficult character of all of them.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. It was not particularly well received. The novel ‘Karakter’ was released 10 years later, out of Bordewijk’s desire to expand the story and the characters.

En ja, want Bordewijk is er uitstekend in geslaagd een drietal stugge, onverzettelijke en koppige personages neer te zetten, aan wie de titel Karakter wel besteed is.
Maar in al het emotionele onvermogen van de karakters van de karakters gaat zoveel schuil dat het toch enorm raakt. Now I have finally read the book and it did not disappoint as well.

De spanningen tussen vader en zoon worden steeds heftiger en de sfeer wordt steeds grimmiger.
